9Thirty Theatre Gulf Spill Benefit

Reprinted from Ecorazzi: “NYC Eco Theater Company Holds Benefit to Raise Money For Gulf Coast Animals” by Michael Parrish DuDell, July 19, 2010

Here in New York City we have commercial theater, experimental theater, really bad theater…but who knew we also have green theater, too!?

9Thirty Theatre Company is one of New York City’s first eco theater companies, and we happen to think they’re pretty darn neat. By having the environment serve as a character, theme, or the plot of their shows, 9Thirty seeks to raise awareness and take action on pressing environmental issues.

On Sunday, July 25, the theater company with a heart of gold will present THE BIRDS” TO SAVE BIRDS — a benefit reading of “The Brown Pelican” by George Sklar. The event will raise money for both 9Thirty and Tri-State Birds – a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and rehabilitating birds in the Gulf of Mexico.

“After the oil spill I found myself feeling helpless about what I could do to make a difference,” says artistic director Jeff Burroughs. “As of June 1st 658 birds, 279 turtles, and 36 mammals have been found dead. So I created an avenue to DO something! I contacted Tri-State Bird Rescue to put together a benefit.”

Besides the reading, the benefit will also feature organic food and drinks, a good old fashion raffle, and coupons for special discounts on future productions.

Lysistrata, Now

Lysistrata, Now from 9Thirty Theatre Company on Vimeo.

Adaptation & Lyrics by: Jeff Burroughs
Music by: Andrew Pastides & Joe Binder
Directed by: Aaron Gonzalez & Justin Eure

Lysistrata, Now is a fresh adaptation of the anti-war, feminist Greek comedy Lysistrata. This modernized version of the Classic is infused with live blues & folk music and tells the tale of a group of politically-charged women who band together to fight for peace.

We are spreading a message of peace to community that doesn’t normally have access to live theatre in a time when pockets are empty to spread laughter and relief.

Starring: Rebecca Naomi Jones* (Passing Strange, Broadway), Ashley Morris*(Die Mommie Die!, Off-Broadway), Nicole Hodges, and Stacy Salvette. Featuring: Joe Binder*, Freddie Bennett, Jeff Burroughs, Cooper D’Ambrose, Kenn Mann, Andrew Pastides*, and Elizabeth Van Meter. With: Nicole Becker, Jordon Brown, Chance Carroll, Christian Cooper, Lauren Culpepper, and Katherine Elkington.

THE 10 BILLIONTH BABY

Written by Bailey Williams & directed by: Justin Eure

“A woman named Magpie has her second child in a world of only firsts. When the media discovers that he is the ten billionth baby born on Earth, questions rise about the little town of Chester – a town that contains seconds, thirds, and even fourths. Magpie must then decide what is right and what is easy. A question that is only answered with silence.”

THE 10 BILLIONTH BABY was developed as part of Curious Theatre Company’s New Voices program in Denver and was presented at TCG’s 2008 Convention Plenary Session: Theatre and the Environment, moderated by Pulitzer Prize- winning playwright Paula Vogel.

LIVING IN THE BLUE ZONE

Written by Barbara Kingsley (August: Osage County)

“When a small town girl gets the chance to visit her BFF from college, she is thrilled by the prospect of tasting life in the Big Apple. Expectations clash with reality when Darsi learns that sometimes less can be more – right down to the empty matchbox when you’re living in ‘blue zone.'”

COLLAPSE

Written & directed by Sarah H. Haught

“Two tenured employees await delivery of their precious product. When the silence falls, the workers must make sense of the disruption to their own ecosystem. Little do they know that their co-workers have fallen victim of colony collapse disorder…”

MR. SASQUATCH GOES TO WASHINGTON

Written by Michael Anderson & directed by: Justin Eure

“Mr. Sasquatch Goes to Washington is a fast-talking romp through the world of politics, corporations and environmental activism. It features a senator, a bear terrorist, a famous Dr. Suess character and the furriest lobbyist to ever hit Washington!”
