The Designers Accord provides a participatory platform with online and offline manifestations so that members have access to a community of peers who share methodologies, resources, and experiences around environmental and social issues in design.

Of the worldâ€™s total population of 6.5 billion, 5.8 billion people, or 90%, have little or no access to most of the products and services many of us take for granted; in fact, nearly half do not have regular access to food, clean water, or shelter. Design for the Other 90% explores a growing movement among designers to design low-cost solutions for this â€œother 90%.â€ Through partnerships both local and global, individuals and organizations are finding unique ways to address the basic challenges of survival and progress faced by the worldâ€™s poor and marginalized.
Designers, engineers, students and professors, architects, and social entrepreneurs from all over the globe are devising cost-effective ways to increase access to food and water, energy, education, healthcare, revenue-generating activities, and affordable transportation for those who most need them. And an increasing number of initiatives are providing solutions for underserved populations in developed countries such as the United States.
This movement has its roots in the 1960s and 1970s, when economists and designers looked to find simple, low-cost solutions to combat poverty. More recently, designers are working directly with end users of their products, emphasizing co-creation to respond to their needs. Many of these projects employ market principles for income generation as a way out of poverty. Poor rural farmers become micro-entrepreneurs, while cottage industries emerge in more urban areas. Some designs are patented to control the quality of their important breakthroughs, while others are open source in nature to allow for easier dissemination and adaptation, locally and internationally.
Encompassing a broad set of modern social and economic concerns, these design innovations often support responsible, sustainable economic policy. They help, rather than exploit, poorer economies; minimize environmental impact; increase social inclusion; improve healthcare at all levels; and advance the quality and accessibility of education. These designersâ€™ voices are passionate, and their points of view range widely on how best to address these important issues. Each object on display tells a story, and provides a window through which we can observe this expanding field. Design for the Other 90% demonstrates how design can be a dynamic force in saving and transforming lives, at home and around the world.
Paul Kingsnorth, poet, environmentalist, journalist and author ofÂ Real England, attempts to kick off a ground-breaking new literary movement this month,Â The Dark Mountain Projectwith social-web frontiersmanÂ Dougald Hine. Its premise is a radical one;Â if I represent it right, itâ€™s that we are on the brink of catastrophe and itâ€™s artâ€™s reponsibility to face that, and to reflect it in its output. We have been telling the wrong stories. It is time to start telling the right ones:
We donâ€™t believe that anyone â€“ not politicians, not economists, not environmentalists, not writers â€“ is really facing up to the scale of this. As a society, we are all still hooked on a vision of the future as an upgraded version of the present. Somehow, technology or political agreements or ethical shopping or mass protest are meant to save our civilisation from self-destruction. Well, we donâ€™t buy it.
Kingsnorth and Hine have written a remarkableÂ manifesto thatâ€™s well worth reading; itâ€™s erudite, lyrical and, most of all,Â apolcalyptic in an almost William Blake-ish kind of way, seeing civilisation treading on a â€œthin crust of lavaâ€ as the environmental catastrophe looms. Its eight principles of â€œUncivilisationâ€ include the following:
3. We believe that the roots of these crises lie in the stories we have been telling ourselves. We intend to challenge the stories which underpin our civilisation: the myth of progress, the myth of human centrality, and the myth of our separation from â€˜natureâ€™. These myths are more dangerous for the fact that we have forgotten they are myths. 4. We will reassert the role of story-telling as more than mere entertainment. It is through stories that we weave reality.
There is a growing debate here at the RSA Arts & Ecology Centre about the role of apocalyptic art in changing minds. We are fond of quoting Raymond Williams here, â€œthat to be truly radical is to make hope possible rather than despair convincingâ€. If you want people to change, you have to offer them a way to a future that inspires them, rather than terrifies them. Pessimism convinces nobody.
But what if that act of making hope possible only bluntens the urgency of the situation, dissipates the urge to action?
