Platform on tour in Glasgow and Edinburgh, 21-24th October – Platform London.

PLATFORM, the interdisciplinary social and enviromental practice working across arts, activism, education and research are in Scotland next week contributing to the Human Rights Documentary Film Festival in Glasgow as well as the Radical Independent Book Fair in Edinburgh. 

ecoartscotland is a resource focused on art and ecology for artists, curators, critics, commissioners as well as scientists and policy makers. It includes ecoartscotland papers, a mix of discussions of works by artists and critical theoretical texts, and serves as a curatorial platform.

It has been established by Chris Fremantle, producer and research associate with On The Edge Research, Gray’s School of Art, The Robert Gordon University. Fremantle is a member of a number of international networks of artists, curators and others focused on art and ecology.

Arts education for transformation

On the way to the forthcoming Rio+20, we would like to share with you this video by IDEA (International Drama Theatre and Education Association), which celebrates the 2010 World Congress on Arts Education. This video is one of the contributions of the Brazilian Network of Arteducators  (ABRA) to debates taking place on Culture and Sustainability  in the People´s Summit during Rio+20. The 2010 Congress was created by artists and arteducators from 60 countries to share pedagogies that nurture empathy,  solidarity, creative humanity, cooperation and democratic communities for sustainable futures.

Cultura21 is a transversal, translocal network, constituted of an international level grounded in several Cultura21 organizations around the world.

Cultura21′s international network, launched in April 2007, offers the online and offline platform for exchanges and mutual learning among its members.

The activities of Cultura21 at the international level are coordinated by a team representing the different Cultura21 organizations worldwide, and currently constituted of:

– Sacha Kagan (based in Lüneburg, Germany) and Rana Öztürk (based in Berlin, Germany)
– Oleg Koefoed and Kajsa Paludan (both based in Copenhagen, Denmark)
– Hans Dieleman (based in Mexico-City, Mexico)
– Francesca Cozzolino and David Knaute (both based in Paris, France)

Cultura21 is not only an informal network. Its strength and vitality relies upon the activities of several organizations around the world which are sharing the vision and mission of Cultura21

Death of ecoactivists

Hi Sacha

I write with tragic news to inform you that Maria do Espirito Santo da Silva, arts-educator, eco-pedagogue activist, grandmother and student-participant in our teacher education project Voices of the Land based in the Federal University of Para, was assassinated with her husband Jose da Silva, on the 24th May, near to her forest home in the region of Maraba. They were, I believe, returning from meetings with the President of Brazil, explaining the need to defend the forests, rivers and pedagogies of the Amazon.

Please would you inform our colleagues in your network of this tragic news. You can find a few details in the Guardian newspaper. The article focusses on her husband (unfortunately rendering Maria’s lifetime of dedication invisible), but gives you a clear picture of their humanity and courage.

Call for Papers: 2nd UNESCO World Conference on Arts Education

The following information was taken from the conference website http://www.artsedu2010.kr/htm/en/con_info/101_greeting.jsp and from a message distributed by the organizers.  It appears that organizers may now be accepting only abstracts submitted via the website although email and fax addresses are also provided.

Language

Abstract(s) must be written in either ENGLISH or in FRENCH.

English: English abstracts can be submitted electronically through the online system of the official website or

via e-mail at 2010artsedu@korea.kr. We also welcome abstracts submitted by fax: +82 2 2075 6317.

French: We appreciate all French abstracts submitted via e-mail at fr_artsedu@naver.com or also by fax: +82 2 2075 6317.

Conference Framework

Convened at the initiative of UNESCO, in close partnership with the Government of Republic of Korea, the 2nd World Conference on Arts Education will take place in Seoul from 25th to 28th of May, 2010. The Conference will bring together representatives of Ministries of Education and/or Culture from the UNESCO Member States, as well as various experts, researchers and practitioners in the area of Arts Education.

Researchers are invited to submit abstracts for paper presentations within the framework of the upcoming World Conference on Arts Education. Abstracts from any relevant discipline will be considered, provided they make an original academic contribution to the research of arts education and its effects. All workshop topics are listed in the Appendix 1 and also available on the following webpage: http://www.artsedu2010.kr/htm/en/program/201_detail.jsp. The Steering Committee will endeavor to schedule abstracts according to authors’ preferences but reserves the right to decide on the final form of presentation. We particularly seek proposals for research papers on the following topics within the realm of Arts Education:

  • Arts education practices after the Road Map: contextualizing the Road Map
  • Encouraging cooperation and partnerships: within and beyond school
  • Developing the capacity of arts education practitioners: education and training system
  • Reaching out to a diversity of socio-cultural contexts and specificities

What is the value of art?

Sometimes it’s worth asking the questions that are so big people people only raise them shortly before last orders. Kudos to Art 21 | blog who have been running a series of what they call “Flash Points” over the last few months. Their topics have included What’s So Shocking About Contemporary Art? and How Can Art Affect Political Change?

They’ve just started a new strand with What Is The Value of Art, introduced by Beth Allen:

The questions of how art is valued and how it is monetized inevitably overlap: artworks perceived as “important” yield high prices at auction; economic development funding goes to out-of-the-way cultural institutions that bring high quality programming and consequently, tourists, to their neighborhoods; exhibitions that push boundaries attract grants from foundations dedicated to promoting free speech; arts education is consistently underfunded… Buried within questions about the economics of art, are assumptions and often, judgments, about its value that beg to be examined: How is the value of an artist’s intellectual versus physical labor calculated? Are collectible works valued differently than ephemeral projects? How does individual “taste” and critical reception affect the value of an artwork, exhibition, or institution? What factors influence the way we value an artistic experience, as individuals and as a society? How do we quantify the intangible benefits that art education provides? How do we talk about the subtle and personal value that art has in our lives?

And, of course, they’re looking for contributors to stir the pot.
