‘Eco-sustainable public art’ mapped in new database

curating-cities_entri590With searchable artwork themes such as ‘Atmosphere’, ‘Energy’, ‘Renewal & Regeneration’, and ‘Waste, Recycling, Consumption’, a new ‘Curating Cities’ database was launched on 30 August 2013. It maps “the increasingly important and emerging field of eco-sustainable public art.”

The ‘Curating Cities’ database is developed as a resource for researchers, academics, artists, curators, educators, commissioning agencies and sponsors working in the field as well as those interested in promoting sustainability via public art.

In addition to descriptive information, the database evaluates the aims and outcomes of each project as well as the external constraints (and subsequent negotiations) that influence the production of public artworks.

Curating Cities is an Australian Research Council funded Linkage project led by Professors Jill Bennett and Richard Goodwin, and Chief Curator Felicity Fenner of the National Institute for Experimental Arts (NIEA) at the University of New South Wales’ College of Fine Arts.

Culture|Futures is an international collaboration of organizations and individuals who are concerned with shaping and delivering a proactive cultural agenda to support the necessary transition towards an Ecological Age by 2050.

The Cultural sector that we refer to is an interdisciplinary, inter-sectoral, inter-genre collaboration, which encompasses policy-making, intercultural dialogue/cultural relations, creative cities/cultural planning, creative industries and research and development. It is those decision-makers and practitioners who can reach people in a direct way, through diverse messages and mediums.

Affecting the thinking and behaviour of people and communities is about the dissemination of stories which will profoundly impact cultural values, beliefs and thereby actions. The stories can open people’s eyes to a way of thinking that has not been considered before, challenge a preconceived notion of the past, or a vision of the future that had not been envisioned as possible. As a sector which is viewed as imbued with creativity and cultural values, rather than purely financial motivations, the cultural sector’s stories maintain the trust of people and society.

A Climate Change in the Art World?

An interesting article on www.artnews.com, written by Robin Cembalast, gives insight about the impact of Hurricane Sandy on the art community in New York and shows that Sandy could have been the wake-up call for the community to realize that action against climate change is required on their part.

Barry Bergdoll, MoMA’s Chief Curator of Architecture and Design is thinking about reshaping New York in a collective movement of architects, designer, officials and others:

“I don’t want to have yet another panel discussion, I want something that takes it to yet another level of effectiveness. I’m trying to figure out what that is.”

A more radical art project concerned with Global Warming is the Greenhouse Britain by theHarrisons, as it addresses resettlement as the final consequence of climate change and shows how artists can work with architects and urban planners to redesign cities and neighborhoods. Of course this proposes a more drastic approach to the reaction to climate change and arts’s role in it, as it asumes that rising water levels are inevitable and that the then displaced population will need a differently designed civilization. But maybe adaption to climate change will require this kind of transformation?

Environmental “artshop” and teaching laboratory this fall at Parsons the New School for Design

From the 27th of September, continuing over a four-month period, artists, designers, architects, dancers, chefs and scientists will be offering a wide array of interactive exchanges, ranging from workshops to of-site explorations at theSheila C. Johnson Design Center (SJDC) atParsons The New School for Design (NYC, USA).

The focus of this laboratory lies in public participation dynamically transforming and shaping the experience of both visitors and artists. Radhika Subramaniam, Director and Chief Curator of the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center and the curator of the lab supports this approach of letting the public engage more and subsequently think more:

“We see the galleries as spaces with which to think, rather than as venues for display.”

The opening reception illustrates the nature of the gallery, as the artist Tattfoo Tan is assisted by a member of the Staten Island Collective 5 P.M. (Poop Machine) ,  a chicken, in  the workshop on raising urban chickens!

Beyond Landscape at the Marin Community Foundation

Beyond Landscape at the Marin Community Foundation is the first of three exhibitions being organized and curated by ecoartspace in Northern California for one of the largest community foundations in the nation. The first exhibit which consists of over 160 works by over 60 artists who belong to the Women Environmental Artist Directory or WEAD opened on June 14th and had an opening reception on June 28th. Artworks were selected through a national call on CaFE and were juried by Susan Leibovitz Steinman, Artist and co-founder of WEAD (Oakland, CA); Bonnie Sherk – Artist and Founder & Director of Life Frames, Inc. & A Living Library (San Francisco, CA); Gloria F. Orenstein – Professor of Comparative Literature and Gender Studies at USC (Los Angeles, CA); Randy Jayne Rosenberg – Executive Director and Chief Curator for Art Works for Change (Oakland, CA); and Patricia Watts – Founder/west coast curator of ecoartspace (CA).

Since 1996 WEAD has focused on women’s unique perspectives to further understanding of ecological and social justice art. Run by a hands on activist board of arts professionals they published a print directory of artists from 1996-­‐2009, and since 1999, a networking website that includes a biannual critical arts magazine featuring essays by independent writers, curators, and artists. The directory currently has over 300 members.

The Marin Community Foundationhas exhibited art in its office space for nearly the entire 25 years of its existence and has an open floor plan, with large wall spaces and lighting system. The offices are located at 5 Hamilton Landing in a 28,000 sq. ft. former airplane hanger space at Hamilton Airfield in Novato, CA.

Works are for sale to the public through WEAD and 85% of each sale will go to the artist. Next on the exhibition schedule is a water show that will open early October and run through January 2013.

ecoartapace ecoartspace is a nonprofit platform providing opportunities for artists who address the human/nature relationship in the visual arts. Since 1999 they have collaborated with over 150 organizations to produce more than 40 exhibitions, 100 programs, working with 400 + artists in 15 states nationally and 8 countries internationally. Currently they are developing a media archive of video interviews with artists and collection of exhibitions ephemera for research purposes. Patricia Watts is founder and west coast curator. Amy Lipton is east coast curator and director of the ecoartspace NYC project room.
